Revival of the Beacon Theater

A group called 4th Wall Productions recently purchased the old Beacon Theater in our town. Today they held an open house to ask for donations, spur interest, and recruit volunteers.

Stop by the theater today, or see the website. Donate and help Beacon become the premier arts spot in Dutchess County.

Lots of interesting donations of late, including signed art books and other unique art books. STOP IN!!! SUPPORT HOWLAND LIBRARY!!!!

I stopped in the bookstore the other day and noticed that there were a lot of empty boxes in the back, and that means we got a lot of donations. Among them are various art books, some of which are signed.

Beacon Reads is FLUSH with books at the moment. No better time to come in than now and rake up some deals. We have 1000s of gently-read books, all for ridiculous prices, and the proceeds go to a good cause.

We are not accepting any more donations until November, so hold your used books until then.

Cutting boxes

I am the volunteer guy who goes in once in awhile and cuts up the boxes at Beacon Reads. MAN have I been delinquent. I must have cut up 50 boxes tonight. That means MORE BOOKS are here, MORE VIDEOS, MORE... whatever. We even have EMPTY VHS cases, plastic and clear. Know anyone looking for them? We have a lot.

I gotta drop off some books soon, too. I finished all of Augusten Burroughs' books so I will drop them off soon, along with a bloated bag of my wife's trashy novels and dime thrillers.

Don't tell her I said that.

Dead Of Winter

But we are still open. We have many new volunteers and the store is open regularly on Saturday and Sunday at noon.

As always we have more books that we know what to do with. If you are looking for a good deal on books any time of the week, this is the place to go.

Holy Cow

I have not been to the store in awhile but man are we flush with books. Don't look now but I hear there will be a sale during the Spirit of Beacon day, Sept 28th. I can't find a reliable link to anything about that.

The bookstore will be open that day and we will be selling books at even more cutthroat prices than usual.

Up To The Nose With Videos Again

I have not worked the store in awhile, but the other volunteers have been busy. The Howland Library unloaded some old videos on us and there are boxes of them sitting on the floor. Some are old titles, some are recent. Some are movies, others are instructional videos. Stop in for a look!

I spent a few hours last night collapsing old boxes. We get so many donations over time that we have to get rid of the containers they came to us in.

I also got a decent crowd for working three hours. I met a few people in the town, had a few regulars, too. Nice to see a city active on a Thursday night.

I'm not saying you might find a Pollack in our trash or a first edition of Tom Sawyer in our back room, but you might find a hard to find book you have been looking for.

I recently sold a copy of some relatively rare books that sell elsewhere for a lot more than we ask.

Art Books, DVDs, VHS

We received a great deal of art books lately - criticism, history, artist's works - some of them quite old.

There are also a lot of recently acquired videos - popular movies, and National Geographic specials - on DVD and VHS.

With the warm weather we get a lot of new stuff and it disappears faster these days, too.

Being and Beacon - Paul

"Working" at Beacon Reads has been fun these past few months. I started in January of this year. I say "working" in quotes because all of us who work here are volunteers. We do this to help the Howland Public Library and the community of Beacon.

I've met a lot of people in the community since starting here. First, there is the Boss Lady (as she is affectionately known), Marcia. Marcia said I would meet a few characters working here and right she was. Beacon Reads has a few regulars, some of whom stop in with a story, others with a bag of books for us to sell. Others quietly peruse the shelves and leave. On occasion I have a lively conversation over a book someone is purchasing - any subject from belief in a deity to Danielle Steele's prolific career.

Not only do we get Beacon residents stopping in, but the weekenders and tourists stop in. They might be people with second homes somewhere in the area, or people who have come for the day to see Dia and walk around the town.

We appreciate all our customers and look forward to having more. Please tell a friend. We got a lot of good stuff at great prices, and a friendly staff to help.
